Hello,
we are using Intel VTune 2015 for profiling our application which is running under CentOS 5.11.
Our application uses c++ signals for the control flow. When trying to do a basic hotspots analysis using amplxe-cl command line tool with the following parameters: 
-duration 20 --run-pass-thru=--profiling-signal=1
VTune yields the following error message when detaching after the 20 seconds duration. Alternative to the number 1 I also tried number 4 without any change in results.

amplxe: Error: Assertion failed: handler_ex1445: obj->is_first_class_handler_set[signo] == 1 : BUG! : signo == 1. Please contact the technical support. 

Without using "--run-pass-thru=--profiling-signal=1" as parameter the signal handlers of our application do not work after profiling and the process is ended when receiving a signal.
Please provide guidance on how to use VTune in this scenario.

We are now trying to evaluate this tool for our products.

Our main interest in vtune is wether is can profile apps without any overhead.

The problem with profiling is that generally the profiling code itself ads overhead:

• Extra cycles are performed for accounting. In tight loops, it is not uncommon at all that the profiling code take more time to process than the code you are profiling. This serious messes up measurements and can make results very confusing
• The profiling code may also mess up CPU pipelining/branch prediction,  caching, content switches (between threads) and jit. Again, this can skew the profiling result significantly.

We are hoping that maybe vtune can help on some of these issues by using CPU counters more, sometime that hopefully may allow the code to run at full speed without interruption.

Could you give us helpful comments on this concern?

I am running a Go program with dwarf information and VTune does a good job figuring out line numbers and so forth but it struggles with stack walks. I am guessing that it is because Go's stack conventions, how Go uses EBP for example, are different than those supported by Vtune. Is there a document or some sort of clue sheet about what Vtune expects from the stack formats? Also can anyone think of a work around that doesn't require Go changing its conventions.

I am getting an error while loading a result from a general exploration experiment.  This is an MPI executable, but collection was only done for one process on each node.  See attached PNG for the error message.  Any ideas?

There seems to be some mention of a command-line sfdump5 tool that can be used to process/view the samples within a .tb6 file. There is also documentation of this tool in the 3.11 revision of the SEP User Guide.

However, I can't seem to find this tool in the latest VTune Amplifier XE installation - C:\Program Files\Intel\VTune Amplifier XE 2015\bin32.

Has this sfdump5 tool been deprecated?

When evaluating the vtune_amplifier_xe_2015.1.0.367959 on Linux I experienced a kernel oops in the vtune kernel modules. I was trying to run the microarchitecture -> general exploration -> bandwidth test. Centos 7 x86 default install updated with all patches. Code was running on SNB machine with the vtune CLI_install installed as per manual.

(CLI_install has another issues, the RHEL/Centos kernel sources are not in /usr/src/linux, installer does not pick that up automatically)
(Manual notes that power sampler should be installed but I read that it was removed earlier, update docs?)

Any ideas besides it's open source, please submit a patch? :)

I am newer to VTune, and using VTune performance analyzer v9.1 on Windows XP(Intel Pentium G3420).

When I try to log Clockticks information, the VTune always show erro that "Failed to create sampling data base. probably .tb5 files are corrupted or don't exist".

When using "Quick performace analysis wizard", the "Clockticks" column always be zero('0') while other columns seem normal.

By the way, the programma to be analysied is development with Visual Studio 2008, MFC.

I'm trying to call the functions __itt_pause() and __itt_resume() from within offload regions so that I can only sample specific sections of my code in a knc-bandwidth collection. However I'm having problems with linking that I can't figure out. I am using Intel(R) VTune(TM) Amplifier XE 2015 Update 1.

My code looks like:

I am analyzing “memory bound” metric in my code with Vtune. According to "Intel® 64 and IA-32 Architectures Optimization Reference Manual-B.3.2.3":

Today I started an evaluation of VTune Amplifier for Linux. (2015 edition, update 1.) I installed it on 'Ubuntu 14.04' with sudo root. The installation process reported success. Yet, when I do an advanced hotspot analysis, I get this warning: Cannot locate file 'vtsspp.ko' When installed with sudo root, and the installation process succeeds, should the kernel module not be built properly and be able to be found? I am running the wordcount example of hadoop on intel vtune for hotspot analysis. Command is bin/hadoop jar /usr/local/hadoop/hadoop-examples-1.2.1.jar wordcount inputfile outputfile. Hotspot analysis provides the modules information libzip.so, [compiled java code], [Dynamic code], libjvm.so, libc-2.17.so, libz.so.1.2.8 and [unknown]. My understanding is that [unknown] module is the wordcount application. However, to be sure I want to see what function inside the wordcount example are the hotspot functions. 

I have tried to recompile the java source code with the -g flag and updated the jar file however I still can not see what is inside the unknown module.  

Can you please tell me what is the best way to solve this issue?

I am running the svm application on intel vtune for hotspot analysis. The input file size is 2GB. The application run fine however the hotspot analysis on intel vtune GUI just provides the following summary information:

No bottom-up analysis is created that shows the modules and the functions for hotspot. In analysis type tab of intel vtune, I have used parameter "duration time estimate: over 3 hours".

From the documents, I read that the attribution of cycles to instructions or source code lines can sometimes be one off. A line too early, or too late.

In my run, I see very inaccurate mappings. Both between source code and assembly code. And also between cycles spent and source code. See the attached screen shot. My source code is mostly intrinsics, so I have a pretty good understanding to what it should map. Yet, a simple intrinsic sometimes maps to a whole page of assembly? How could this be?

In the example from the screenshot: a single _mm256_load_ps() gets mapped to 29 assembly instructions?

And the cycles do not evenly distribute over my source code lines: almost all lines get no cycles attributed, only a sparse few get all the cycles?

    I'm using Intel Vtune Amplifier XE to to profiling jobs and I'm confused about the selection of Duration Estimation in Project Property. If I choose Between 1min and 15min and enable multiple runs, does it mean that the duration time of multiple runs is between 1min and 15min or the single run time of target application is between 1min and 15min?

I just installed VTune Amplifier XE 2015. Trying to run the tachyon tutorial example I get the error: "Cannot load data file `D:\tmp\r000hs\data.0\7576-2976.0.trace' (Data file is corrupted)." I also get the warning: "Cannot find data to precompute. Skipping the precomputation step."

I tried to follow the instructions in this thread: https://software.intel.com/en-us/forums/topic/279872. This did not help. I am running VTune Amplifier XE 2015 Update 1 through Visual Studio 2010 on Win7. Running as an administrator does not help. Changing results directory does not help. Disabling "high accurate cpu time" does not help.

Can you please tell me how to provide the source code of any program to intel vtune. My goal is to observe which function in the application is taking most of the execution time. I provide the executable file to intel vtune and I am running the application in the linux environment. I have observed that in the Botton-up tab, you can select the grouping mode "source file /class/fucntion/call stack" and the "function/call stack". I was expecting to see the functions' detail implemented in the source code of the program. But that is not the case.

Do I need to provide the source code to intel vtune?
